I just got rid of my directv and wanted a good antenna to receive over air tv. The price was good and having an amplifier and better range of reception seemed to make this my only choice. First, don’t use without the amplifier. Even with the amplifier, I had to lean it at an angle against a wall to get the best reception and signal strength not flat like it says. Mostly the signals are great for the channels in range. I was able to get 11 in all. Some have some issues and fade or get noise for a bit but all in all it worked out well. Haven’t had any storms yet so I can’t tell you about that. I don’t regret the purchase.
The antenna works well once you find the right place inside to put it. I spent several hours with a step ladder trying to position this antenna in the right place, as high as possible to get as many channels as I could. It does deliver HD over the air, as advertised. We even pick up channels we had no idea existed because we have cable in the other rooms.
My only complaint is that the cables are not long enough, especially if you want to mount it high and use the powered booster. I chose not to use the booster and mounted it as high as possible with and extra 25 feet of RG6 cable. Even with that lengthy run, there’s seemingly no signal loss.
This antenna is nearly worthless. In the same location, a ten dollar antenna (also made by RCA) like the old time rabbit ears/loop combo works perfectly, pulling in high def stations I didn’t even know about.
I bought two antennae to experiment with before I jump off the cable bandwagon. This unit was my first attempt and my first “indoor” HDTV antenna. I was really impressed at first, expecting I guess to see 1983 rabbit ear-type reception problems and finding the picture and sound very crisp compared to that; but noticed it was very finicky and any movement or adjustment subjected me to wild changes in reception. One of my “main” local channels, which is VHF, was very weak despite many others being extremely strong. The others were all UHF. The reason I gave the antenna a relatively poor rating is because I tried an alternative Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified High-Definition Antenna for Off-Air HDTV Reception indoor antenna in the exact same location and had better results on every channel, across the board. Good enough to go ahead and ditch cable this week. I should add that my home sits in a bit of a valley and I’m surrounded by tall trees. I am within 10 miles of all of the relevant towers, however. I’ll keep experimenting and I hope to find a flat antenna that works as well because it is just cooler looking and for my other TV there is not a good spot to hide the Terk.
I had high expectations, based on all the reviews. Sad to say, this unit delivered exactly… nothing.
I am in a major metro, very flat area, about 10 miles from the broadcast antennas, no obstructions, no aluminum siding or other induction hazards to degrade the signal. I worked in telecom for 20 years so I’m a more little savvy about electrical signals and line-of-sight than the average guy. I hooked it up right. I scanned correctly.
I plugged this turkey in and got exactly one snowy signal, so bad I could barely tell what language it was being broadcast in. It did not matter where in the house I placed the antenna, how high or low (I even took it outside!), the signal was complete crap. I even took it across the street and hooked it up to my neighbor’s TV, same thing. One piddly snowy channel.
I returned this unit, and and buying a Winegard outdoor antenna to pick up the 30+ channels my neighbor gets on HIS antenna.
